Anti-Christ
Nietzsche's Final Polemic
Friedrich Nietzsche wrote The Anti-Christ in the autumn of 1888, weeks before his mental collapse in Turin. It was his last sustained work, and it reads like it: compressed, furious, uninterested in persuading anyone who is not already paying attention.
What the Book Argues
The target is Christianity, but more precisely the psychology behind it. Nietzsche's argument is that Christian morality represents a revolt of the weak against the strong, orchestrated by Paul of Tarsus, who took the instincts of a priestly caste and universalized them into a world religion. Pity, humility, and self-denial are not virtues in Nietzsche's reading. They are strategies of resentment, designed to make strength feel guilty for being strong.
Nietzsche draws a sharp line between Jesus and Christianity. Jesus, in his account, was a kind of holy fool whose message died with him on the cross. What followed was Paul's invention: an institutional religion built on guilt, sin, and the promise of an afterlife that devalues the only life anyone actually has. The book also contains Nietzsche's most sustained engagement with Buddhism, which he treats with considerably more respect than Christianity, though he ultimately rejects it too.
Why Read This Edition
The See Sharp Press edition is compact and affordable. The translation is direct and readable, without the scholarly apparatus that weighs down some academic editions. For readers new to Nietzsche, this is a faster entry point than Zarathustra, though it assumes some familiarity with his vocabulary.
