Consolation of Philosophy

<p>Boethius wrote this in a Roman prison in the year 524, waiting for execution, and set it up as a dialogue between himself and Lady Philosophy. Fortune, he is told, never promised anything; what she gave she can take back. The book dominated medieval Europe for a thousand years and is still one of the cleanest statements ever written of the stoic-Christian case against self-pity.</p>
