Jonathan Bowden was an English painter, novelist, and orator who became one of the most distinctive voices on the British far right before his death in 2012. Cultured Thug collects his essays and lectures on the writers, artists, and thinkers he considered essential: figures the mainstream had either forgotten or refused to engage with.

What the Book Covers

The essays range across Wyndham Lewis, D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Carlyle, H.P. Lovecraft, Julius Evola, Yukio Mishima, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Dominique Venner, and others. Bowden's method was not scholarly analysis. He delivered these pieces as spoken performances, often without notes, and they retain that energy on the page: rapid, associative, packed with assertions that a more cautious writer would hedge.

Bowden's central conviction was that the right had surrendered the cultural field to the left, and that recovering it required engagement with art, philosophy, and literature rather than electoral politics alone. He was as likely to discuss Nietzsche's aesthetics as he was to praise a fascist poster. The essays are uneven by design. Some are ten pages of compressed insight. Others are provocations meant to start arguments that polite society would prefer to avoid.

Edited posthumously by Alex Kurtagic and published by Counter-Currents, this volume represents the most comprehensive available collection of Bowden's written and transcribed work.
