Jonathan Bowden's Extremists: Studies in Metapolitics collects his longer essays and edited lectures on the intellectual figures he considered essential to understanding the European right. The subjects include Ezra Pound, Carl Schmitt, Leo Strauss, Bill Hopkins, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and others who operated at the intersection of art, philosophy, and political radicalism. Bowden (1962-2012) was a British intellectual, painter, and orator known for his dense, allusive speaking style and his refusal to simplify.

Where other Bowden collections capture the energy of his live lectures, Extremists gives the reader the more sustained, written arguments. The essays are metapolitical in the strict sense: they treat culture, literature, and philosophy as the ground on which political possibilities are created or destroyed. Bowden's Schmitt essay, for instance, is one of the clearest introductions to the concept of the political that exists in English from a right-wing perspective.
