Hitler's Memoir and Political Manifesto

Adolf Hitler dictated Mein Kampf while imprisoned in Landsberg am Lech in 1924, following the failed Beer Hall Putsch. The book was published in two volumes: the first in 1925 and the second in 1926. It is part autobiography, part political manifesto. Hitler recounts his childhood in Austria, his years as a struggling artist in Vienna, his experience as a soldier in the First World War, and the formation of his political ideology. The second volume lays out his vision for the future of Germany, the National Socialist movement, and his theories on race, propaganda, and the state.

Mein Kampf is one of the most consequential political documents of the twentieth century. It is also, by scholarly consensus, poorly written, repetitive, and structurally chaotic. Its historical importance lies not in its literary quality but in the fact that it laid out, years in advance, a political program that was subsequently carried out with catastrophic consequences. Serious engagement with the history of the twentieth century requires reading primary sources, including uncomfortable ones. This Clemens and Blair edition is complete and unabridged.
