The Document

The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion first appeared in Russian in 1903, attributed to the journalist Sergei Nilus. Presented as the minutes of a secret meeting of Jewish leaders plotting world domination, the text was conclusively identified as a fabrication by the London Times in 1921, drawing heavily on an 1864 French political satire by Maurice Joly that had nothing to do with Jews. Despite this, the Protocols became one of the most widely circulated political documents of the twentieth century.

Why It Matters

The Protocols were used to justify pogroms in Tsarist Russia, were promoted by Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent in the 1920s, served as a propaganda tool under the Third Reich, and continue to circulate in political movements worldwide. You cannot understand modern antisemitism, or the structure of conspiracy thinking more broadly, without reading the text at the center of it. The document's influence on twentieth-century politics has been enormous, regardless of its fraudulent origins.
