Each chapter places the battle in its political, religious, and strategic context, drawing on primary sources from both sides of the conflict.

The Corrective

Ibrahim, a scholar of Arabic and medieval history whose parents are Egyptian Coptic Christians, writes explicitly against the dominant academic narrative that frames the Crusades as unprovoked European aggression against a peaceful Islamic world. His counter-argument is that the Crusades were a belated and limited response to four centuries of Islamic expansion that had already conquered the entire Christian Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and parts of Italy and France. The book marshals the sources, both Latin and Arabic, to make this case. Ibrahim's treatment of the fall of Constantinople is particularly detailed, drawing on Greek, Turkish, and Venetian accounts of the siege.

The book covers a vast chronological range without becoming a dry survey. Ibrahim writes with narrative momentum, and the battle descriptions are vivid without being sensationalized. The connecting thread is his argument that the conflict between Christendom and Islam is not a medieval relic but a continuous phenomenon with roots in theology, not merely politics.
