Submission (2015) imagines a near-future France in which a Muslim Brotherhood candidate wins the presidency with Socialist support, and a disaffected Sorbonne professor of Huysmans decides that conversion to Islam offers more than secular liberalism ever did. The novel is routinely misread as anti-Islamic polemic. Its real target is the exhaustion of the West: a civilization so emptied of conviction that it cannot summon a reason to resist anything. Published the day of the Charlie Hebdo massacre, it became the most debated French novel in decades.

Annihilation (2022) is Houellebecq's longest and most personal novel. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue, cyberterrorism, and a mysterious video circulating online, the book follows Paul Raison, a senior advisor to the French finance minister, as his father suffers a stroke and his own marriage frays. The political thriller elements are present but secondary. The heart of the book is Houellebecq's reckoning with aging, family obligation, and the approach of death. It is his most tender novel, and his most controlled.

H.P. Lovecraft: Against the World, Against Life (1991) is Houellebecq's early critical essay on the American horror writer who shaped his literary sensibility more than any other. The essay argues that Lovecraft's power lies in his absolute rejection of the modern world: his racism, his misanthropy, his cosmic horror are not flaws but the source of his art. It is the key to understanding what Houellebecq values in literature.
