The Complete Argument

Arthur Schopenhauer published the first volume of The World as Will and Representation in 1818, when he was thirty years old. It sold almost nothing. Over the next three decades, he continued to develop, refine, and supplement his arguments, eventually publishing the second volume in 1844. This bundle collects both volumes in Dover's unabridged editions, giving you the full scope of one of the most important philosophical works of the nineteenth century.

What's Included

Volume 1 contains Schopenhauer's core thesis: the world we perceive is representation (appearance), but the underlying reality is will, a blind, striving, purposeless force that drives all existence. From this foundation he builds a complete system covering epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, and the possibility of transcendence through the denial of the will. The argument draws on Kant's critical philosophy and Indian thought in equal measure.

Volume 2 is the supplement. Schopenhauer added these chapters over thirty years, elaborating on every major section of the first volume. The supplements are longer and more discursive than the original text. Many readers find them more enjoyable. This is where Schopenhauer works through the details, pursues tangents, and writes with the confidence of a man who has had decades to think about what he meant.

Why This Edition

The Dover editions use the E.F.J. Payne translation, which remains the standard English rendering. They are unabridged, affordable, and built to last through serious study.
