The Blueprint for Revolution

Vladimir Lenin published What Is To Be Done? in 1902, fifteen years before the revolution it helped make possible. The pamphlet is the founding document of Bolshevik organizational theory. Its central argument is simple and radical: the working class, left to itself, will develop only "trade union consciousness," a concern for wages and working conditions. Revolutionary consciousness must be brought to the workers from outside, by a disciplined vanguard party of professional revolutionaries.

The Argument

Lenin wrote the pamphlet as a polemic against the "Economists," a faction within Russian Social Democracy that believed the revolutionary movement should follow the workers' spontaneous demands rather than directing them. Lenin considered this a fatal error. Without a centralized, disciplined party organization operating under strict ideological unity, he argued, the movement would dissipate into reformism and be absorbed by the existing order.

The organizational model Lenin proposes here became the template for the Bolshevik Party and, subsequently, for communist parties worldwide. Democratic centralism, the professional revolutionary, the party newspaper as collective organizer: all of these ideas are worked out in this text. Whether you consider the result a liberation or a catastrophe, the intellectual architecture starts here.

Why It Still Matters

The question Lenin raised has never gone away. Every political movement eventually faces the tension between spontaneous energy and disciplined organization. What Is To Be Done? is the most influential answer ever given on one side of that debate.
