A Jewish Writer Addresses the Gentile World

Maurice Samuel published You Gentiles in 1924. Samuel was a Romanian-born, British-educated Jewish writer who had settled in the United States. The book is his attempt to explain, directly and without diplomatic hedging, what he considered the fundamental and irreconcilable differences between Jewish and Gentile modes of life, thought, and feeling.

What the Book Argues

Samuel's thesis is that Jews and Gentiles operate from different spiritual foundations. The Gentile world, as he describes it, is built on play, sport, war, and the aesthetic enjoyment of life for its own sake. The Jewish world is built on an absolute seriousness about moral and spiritual questions that makes the Gentile pursuit of pleasure and glory seem trivial. Samuel does not present this as a matter of superiority or inferiority. He presents it as a matter of incompatibility. The two modes of being, he argues, cannot be synthesized or merged. Assimilation fails because it asks Jews to adopt a spiritual posture that is alien to their nature.

The book has had a peculiar afterlife. Passages from it are widely quoted in fringe and antisemitic literature, often torn from context to support conclusions Samuel himself did not draw. The book is far more nuanced and self-critical than its reputation suggests. Samuel is frequently ironic, occasionally self-mocking, and consistently more interested in diagnosis than prescription.
