The Fourth Political Theory
Beyond the Three Failed Theories
Alexander Dugin's The Fourth Political Theory begins with a simple premise: liberalism, communism, and fascism were the three major political ideologies of the twentieth century. Communism collapsed in 1991. Fascism was destroyed in 1945. Liberalism appears to have won, but Dugin argues that its victory is hollow, producing a world of atomized consumers, cultural dissolution, and spiritual emptiness. His proposal is a fourth theory that rejects all three predecessors and builds on a different foundation entirely.
The Philosophical Framework
The book draws heavily on Martin Heidegger, particularly the concept of Dasein (being-in-the-world) as a replacement for the liberal subject, the communist class, and the fascist race/state as the fundamental political actor. Dugin argues that Heidegger's critique of Western metaphysics provides the philosophical basis for a politics that is neither individualist nor collectivist but rooted in the existential particularity of peoples and traditions. The book also engages with the European New Right (Alain de Benoist), with Traditionalism (Rene Guenon, Julius Evola), and with the geopolitical theories of Carl Schmitt.
Controversy and Influence
Dugin is the most controversial political philosopher of the early twenty-first century. His critics dismiss him as a neo-fascist ideologue and a Kremlin propagandist. His defenders regard him as the most serious critic of liberal globalism writing today. The Fourth Political Theory has been translated into dozens of languages and is read across the political spectrum, from traditionalist conservatives to left-wing anti-globalists. Whether one regards it as profound or as an intellectual costume for Russian imperial ambition, it is the most discussed work of political philosophy published since the end of the Cold War.
