Siddhartha, published in 1922, is Hermann Hesse's novel about a young Brahmin in the time of Gautama Buddha who leaves his family to seek enlightenment. He joins the wandering ascetics. The novel is barely over a hundred pages, and it covers an entire life. Hesse's prose is simple and rhythmic, almost incantatory in places. Context

Hesse wrote Siddhartha during a period of deep engagement with Indian philosophy and Jungian psychology. The novel was a bestseller in the 1960s counterculture, but it is a much more serious and disciplined book than its reputation suggests. It is not a manual for dropping out.
