What's Included

Modern Man in Search of a Soul (1933) is the most accessible entry point into Jung's thought. A collection of essays written for a general audience, it covers the key concepts: the collective unconscious, archetypes, individuation, the relationship between psychology and religion, and Jung's critique of modern civilization as spiritually impoverished. This is the book to start with.

Psychology of the Unconscious (1912) is the work that broke Jung from Sigmund Freud. Originally published as Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido, it redefines libido as a general psychic energy rather than a purely sexual drive and introduces the concept of the collective unconscious through an extended analysis of myth, symbol, and the fantasy material of a young American woman known as "Miss Miller." The book is denser than Modern Man and rewards patient reading.

The Red Book: A Reader's Edition is Jung's private journal of active imagination, composed between 1914 and 1930. For decades it existed only as a rumor. When it was finally published in 2009, it revealed the visionary experiences that fed all of Jung's later theoretical work: encounters with archetypal figures, descents into the unconscious, and dialogues with inner personalities that Jung treated as real. The Reader's Edition provides the complete text in a portable format without the full-size facsimile reproductions of the original.
