What's Included

1984 (Signet, 75th Anniversary Edition). Orwell's 1949 novel of totalitarian control, surveillance, and the corruption of language. Winston Smith's doomed rebellion against the Party remains the single most referenced political novel in English. This anniversary edition includes an afterword by Erich Fromm.

Animal Farm (Signet, 75th Anniversary Edition). The 1945 allegorical fable of revolution betrayed. The pigs take over the farm, rewrite the commandments, and end up indistinguishable from the farmers they replaced. Short enough to read in an afternoon, dense enough to teach for a semester.

Review of Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler (Eris). Orwell's 1940 review, published while Britain was at war, in which he tries to account for Hitler's appeal honestly rather than dismissively. A fascinating document: Orwell recording his own complicated reaction to the book and the man, refusing easy answers.
